MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING  NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
May 20, 2009
President Doug Humes opened the meeting at 7:55 P.M. at Dunwoody.
Jim Kisela, Treasurer, reported that we have about $110,000 in the treasury. A lot of this money has been earmarked for projects at the Paper Mill House.
Our next upcoming event is Colonial Day on Saturday, June 6. He went over the different activities of the day and the 5K run and walk at 4:00 P.M. at Episcopal Academy. The first 200 applicants will be accepted.
Doug presented the list of nominees for officers for the year 2009-2010. President – Doug Humes Vice President – Chris Driscoll Treasurer – Jim Kisela Recording Secretary – Rebecca Beaudin Corresponding Secretary – Sharon Haslett
As there were no nominations from the floor, the slate was elected as presented.
Doug then introduced Nancy Loane, Ph.D., who presented a very interesting program entitled “The Women of Valley Forge: Present But Not Accounted For.”

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
April 15, 2009

President Doug Humes opened the meeting at 7:00 P.M. at Dunwoody.

Doug announced the passing of a long time member – John Plank. He will be missed.

Colonial Day will be the first Saturday in June – June 6 – and we are still in need of volunteers. In an effort to make this event more community oriented, we are sponsoring a 5K run and walk at 4:00 P.M. at Episcopal Academy. The first 200 applicants will be accepted. This will be followed by the party for all volunteers at 6:00 P.M.

Wayne Povey presented the list of nominations for officers for the year 2009-2010.

We will vote on these candidates at the next general meeting in May.

Doug mentioned that some of these positions, especially treasurer, need to have an assistant who would be able to take over after the next year. Please see him for more information.

He then introduced William Bunch, auctioneer, who would appraise items that the audience had brought. Each person was allowed to bring up to three small items for appraisal.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING
NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
March 18, 2009

President Doug Humes opened the meeting at Dunwoody at 7:55 P.M.

Doug announced the program for April would be William Bunch, the appraiser. Everyone will be allowed to bring three items for appraisal. This program will start at 7 P.M. on April 15 at Dunwoody. The program on May 20 will be “Letters from Valley Forge” by Dr. Nancy Loane.

He mentioned that the 4th graders will be touring the Paper Mill House on April 14, 15 & 16. Colonial/Heritage Day will be the first Saturday in June – 6/6/09. If anyone wants to volunteer for either event, please contact anyone on the board.

He then introduced Barbara Darling who was presenting the program – “Unlacing the Victorian Woman.”

2008 Minutes
MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
OCTOBER 15, 2008

President Doug Humes opened the meeting at Dunwoody at 7:53 P.M.

Jim Kisela, our treasurer, reported that we are in good shape. All of our accounts are insured and we have a positive cash flow. We receive our income from membership and Colonial Day.

Sid Elston reported that the storm windows at the Paper Mill House have finally been installed, which should help with the heating bill. New carpet will be installed in the community room.

Upcoming events –
1. Clarisa Dillon will present the next program on “Birth to Britches” on Wed. Nov. 12 at Dunwoody.
2. December 6 is the wassail party at the Paper Mill House.
3. Saturday, October 18 is Harvest Day at the Massey house in Broomall from 10A-4P.
4. Also on Oct. 18 is the Trolley festival in Darby. David from Collingdale said this is the 150th anniversary for the trolley in Darby. There will be free rides on a vintage trolley, live music and other activities.

Doug announced that the Town Center has been approved by the supervisors. He also mentioned that long time member John Taylor had recently passed away and will be missed.

Doug then introduced Dr. Joseph Edgette who presented a program on the Titanic and his current research – Titanic Gravesites: A Work in Progress.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
MAY 21, 2008

President Doug Humes opened the meeting at the Paper Mill House at 7:45 P.M. Jim Kisela gave a report on Colonial Day scheduled for June 7. Kathe is busy working on the program book. The posters have been designed but not reproduced yet. There is a raffle for $5/ticket, the prize being a colonial dinner for 8-10 people at the Massey House in Broomall. Andrea is still in need of volunteers to help guide, etc. We have two private homes that will be open; Fran Giuliani will check with one more homeowner to see about opening their home.

Jim also gave the financial report. He stated we are doing well and have approximately $75,000-80,000 in the treasury. We do have some large projects planned for the Paper Mill House which Doug reviewed for those present.

We are presenting two by-law changes. They were sent out in the newsletter, read at the last public meeting and will be voted on tonight. The by-law changes are as follows:

1. The first change is Article VII, Section 5, second sentence. It would now read “No officer may serve more than four successive terms in the same office.” This would allow officers to serve up to four years in the same position, instead of just two years. Motion was made by Sid Elston and seconded by Fran Giuliani and approved by all present.

2. The second change deals with the timing of sending out dues notices. It would now read “Dues shall be due on August 31st, and a first dues notice shall be sent out on or before that date. A second notice shall be sent out on or before October 30th.”

Motion was made by Fay Weeks and seconded by Jim Kisela and approved by all present.

APRIL 16, 2008

President Doug Humes opened the meeting at the township building at 7:40 P.M. He spoke about the upcoming 4th grade school tours to be held the following week. Each tour is three hours and the home schoolers are involved in teaching the school children about early colonial life. Doug also reminded everyone that Colonial Day is June 7 and there is still a need for volunteers to help guide, etc.

Jim and Sharon are both serving their second consecutive term, and have agreed to stay on in their office if the first by-law amendment is passed.

After a short business meeting we then had a very interesting program presented on the Newlin Grist Mill by Dabbs Woodfin Jr.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
FEBRUARY 20, 2008

President Doug Humes welcomed everyone. He spoke of the death of Stan Short, one of the founders of our historical society, and past police chief. He said that Stan’s death was a huge loss for everyone.

Doug mentioned that the 4th grade school tours were the week of April 21 and Colonial Day is Saturday, June 7. We are in need of volunteers and guides.

Our speaker for tonight is Kathleen Ashley from the Family History Center in Broomall who is speaking on “Intro to Genealogy and Intro to the Family History Center.”

This meeting was held in the township building. Refreshments were provided by Marianne Burt and Sharon Haslett.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
MARCH 19, 2008

Vice President Chris Driscoll welcomed everyone. He spoke about the historic ordinance presently being reviewed by the township and county. He also mentioned that we still need volunteers for the 4th grade school tours during the week of April 21 and for Colonial Day on June 7. He suggested that if anyone is interested, they should contact Andrea Povey. Chris announced that the society had acquired Stan Short’s slide collection and it is being permanently preserved.

Our speaker for tonight is Anita Intenzo who is speaking on antique dolls and doll restoration.

This meeting was held in the township building. Refreshments were provided by Marianne Burt and Sharon Haslett.

2007 Minutes

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
OCTOBER 17, 2007

President Doug Humes welcomed everyone and gave a brief summary of what the Society is involved in currently.

Treasurer Jim Kisela gave the treasurer’s report, stating we are in good financial condition.

Our speaker for tonight, Thomas DeFillipo, gave an interesting presentation on his book, Ellis School, which was located on the current SAP property.

This meeting was held in the township building. Refreshments were provided by Marianne Burt and Sharon Haslett with donations from Weinrich’s Bakery.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
May 16, 2007

Jim Kisela, our treasurer, said that we are in good financial condition.

Sid spoke about Madaleen Ellis – how we have lost a great friend, strong leader, and a good worker for the historical society. She was a past president, Colonial Day chairman, and gift shop chairperson. The township organizations will miss her. A suggestion was made from the audience that we should make a donation to the library in her name from the historical society.

Bayard then held the election of new officers. All were unanimously elected. President – Doug Humes, Vice President – Chris Driscoll, Treasurer – Jim Kisela, Recording Secretary – Sharon Haslett, and Corresponding Secretary – Fran Giuliani.

After a brief intermission, we then heard Tom Tanner speak about General Smedley Butler.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING  NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
MARCH 21, 2007

The minutes of the February 21 2007 meeting were reviewed.

Jim Kisela, our treasurer, said that all of our bills are paid and the assets are fine.

Bayard Anderson announced that Colonial Day is Saturday, June 2 and Jim and Kathe Kisela are the chairpersons. A nominating committee has been appointed and the list of candidates will be announced at the next meeting at the township building on the 4th Wednesday of April. We are joining the Friends of the Newtown Library for a program on King Tut.

Chris Driscoll said he received an email regarding the condition of the Hood-Fawkes House on the Dunwoody property. Bayard suggested the residents of Dunwoody form a committee to look into this.

The meeting was adjourned and we enjoyed a program by Robert Sprague on Civil War music.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING  NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
FEBRUARY 21, 2007

The minutes of the January 17, 2007 meeting were reviewed.

Jim Kisela, our treasurer, stated that we are still in good financial condition and have a strong cash flow.

Chris Driscoll, who is in charge of the Website & Gift Shop, passed around a sheet for people to sign up for the monthly newsletter via e-mail. He is currently adding 400 pages of information to the website from the book – Historic Newtown Township. The gift shop will soon be selling a handmade crock and this can be ordered through the website.

Doug Humes spoke about the 4th grade outreach program that was started eleven years ago. This year the dates are April 17, 18 & 19. The society would like to begin an outreach program for high school seniors who have to do a senior project.

Bayard announced that our oldest member, Pauline Hipple, age 105, recently passed away. He also mentioned that Madaleen Ellis has resigned as membership chairman and will be missed.

There has been a committee formed to help inventory the Paper Mill House. The assistant curator is guiding us in this endeavor and it will take several months to complete. A graduate student from Villanova will be working on this project.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed Ashley Hunter’s presentation on Nathaniel Green – the fighting Quaker.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING  NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
JANUARY 17, 2007

The minutes of the November 15, 2006 meeting were reviewed.

Jim Kisela, our treasurer, stated that we are in good financial condition.

Bayard Anderson discussed the following items:

1. The storm windows will be installed at the Paper Mill House in two weeks. The windows are being washed tomorrow and all windows have been painted.
2. We will have an assistant curator from Chester County Historical Society giving us advice on the Paper Mill Museum. She will be working with us once a month for 4-6 hours for three months.
3. We would like to start a Friends of the Paper Mill House group and hope that the neighbors in the immediate area of this home will become involved.
4. The Fourth Graders spring program under the direction of Lisa McCauley will be set up a little different this year. Sue Nagy will help run this event.
5. Dunminning House – The society fought hard to keep this 15,000 sq. ft home from being torn down. Hopefully someone will find a way to use this home so that it will be preserved.
6. A pilot project of a historical inventory will be completed on two properties currently in the process of being developed. The SAP property being developed by the Berwind Investment Group has agreed to preserve the Ellis school building. There are also six cottages on this property. The DuPont property being developed by Rouse Construction will also do an inventory. These inventories will become part of the public record on what will be saved. The supervisors are anticipating a report from us. Hopefully this will be a useful and successful way of handling new developments in the township.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed an interesting program by Peter Tyrrell on the railroad that never was built.

2006 Minutes

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING –TOWNSHIP BLDG. NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
NOVEMBER 15, 2006

The minutes of the October 18, 2006 meeting were reviewed.

Jim Kisela gave a treasurer’s report stating that our total assets are $67,339.54.

Ray Giuliani discussed the fund raising committee. He said they are looking at different tools for fundraising, such as a DVD. We need volunteers to work on different committees.

Bayard Anderson talked about getting storm windows for the Paper Mill House. We have also contacted a painter to do some window painting before the storm windows are installed. Bayard and Sid Elston discussed the construction of new homes on Dunminning Road and the fate of the Dunminning mansion. If the mansion were sold as a twin home, it could be preserved. Bayard made a pitch to the Planning Commission last week and it was voted to deny Bentley Construction’s request to demolish the mansion. Everyone needs to attend the township meetings to express their concerns about saving this unique home. The next meeting to attend would be the Supervisors meeting on Nov. 27.
We need to build an e-mail list of members so we could notify everyone of the important meetings to attend.

The business meeting was adjourned and Stan Short presented his slide program on Newtown Square.

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING  NEWTOWN SQUARE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
OCTOBER 18, 2006

The nomination of officers at the May 17, 2006 meeting was reviewed.
The treasurer, Jim Kisela, gave a brief report of the treasury. The treasurer’s report was accepted.
Sid Elston explained various repairs made to the Paper Mill House. Currently they are exploring how to insulate the windows to save on heating & air conditioning bills. Several members were recently organizing papers in the office and found our articles of incorporation and site survey paper. Sid mentioned that we are concerned about the Dunminning mansion on Dunminning Road. Bentley Construction is working on the construction site and we do not want this mansion torn down. Sid urged everyone to attend the Planning meetings and the Supervisors meetings to support this preservation.
Bayard Anderson noted that Ray Giuliani is in charge of the Ways & Means Committee. There is a need for long term money for the Paper Mill Restoration. We have 4 ½ acres that needs to be explored. Our goal is to turn it into an active, useful year-round place.
Bayard introduced Chris Driscoll who is in charge of our website – www.historicnewtownsquare.org. Be sure to check it out. Chris is also in charge of the gift shop.
We are trying to do an outreach program to the people of Newtown Square. We need to get new people involved. Bayard will be running a special tour on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 P.M. for new people.
Jan Elston announced that the wassail party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Paper Mill House. The tickets will be $15/person. She also requested that if you have an idea for a program to please contact her. November’s meeting will be held at the Township Building on Wednesday, Nov. 15 with Stan Short presenting his slide program on Newtown Square.
The meeting was adjourned and Jan introduced our speaker, Gerry McCavera with his program entitled “The American Flag Goes to War.”
