John Milner on the 1979-1982 restoration of the Square Tavern

May 17 @ 7:00 pm8:00 pm

Free

From 1742 till about 1792, the Square Tavern was the beating heart of Newtown Township, sitting at the crossroads of its two main roads.  During that period, Colonial and British troops marched past its doors, Washington’s spy, Major Clark, passed by on his daily missions, the notorious highwayman Captain Fitz was a patron, and the young tavern boy, Benjamin West, learned to draw and paint, and then left to study in Europe – and become the father of American painting.  And then the tavern closed, the building became a residence, and with additions and renovations over the years, it became forgotten to history.  But after the American Bicentennial celebration in 1976, the community began to rediscover its history.  And in the process the Square Tavern was stripped of several centuries of additions and returned to its original look.  The young preservation architect who was involved in that process, John Milner, returns to Newtown Square 38 years later, to talk about that restoration effort.

The Newtown Square Historical Society invites you to our monthly program on Wednesday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m. to hear John Milner speak on the restoration of the Square Tavern.  John is a respected and widely published architect with a career long passion for historic preservation and new traditional design.  He established his architectural practice in 1968, which developed into a multi-disciplinary historic preservation firm that included historians, architects, archeologists and planners.

All programs are held at the Dunwoody Village auditorium, 3500 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. Refreshments are served.  Come out and meet your history-minded neighbors and learn and be entertained!
